college football, Tennessee Volunteers

by Jordan Grove

Former Tennessee Volunteer defensive back Janzen Jackson has found a new team. His hometown McNeese State Cowboys formerly announced his acceptance to the squad on August 26th.

Jackson was an All-American player at Barbe High School in Lake Charles and was heavily recruited by the home state LSU Tigers but instead chose to sign with Lane Kiffen and Tennessee.

In two seasons with the Volunteers Jackson played in 23 games notching 106 total tackles, 15 pass deflections, six interceptions, and two sacks.

McNeese State head coach Matt Viator sees this as an opportunity for Jackson to atone for past mistakes.

Obviously he’s made some mistakes. He has an opportunity now to come home and get a second chance. We decided to give him that opportunity.”

However, the strengthening of the already strong McNeese secondary was secondary in Viator’s mind to the primary reason for Jackson transferring to the Lake Charles based university.

I had to be sure that he was interested in his education, that he wanted to get a degree as well as play football. He assured me he was and that was one of the reasons he wanted to come back here. He’s also a very good player, obviously, and he will be able to help us in that aspect.”

McNeese State has been tabbed by some collegiate prognosticators to finish first in the Southland Conference and this talented addition to their secondary will only strengthen their claims.
